STEP 1:
Find a "Hungry Market" to Sell to
Not having a market to sell to is like trying to set up a business in a ghost town. You might get some customers, but they won't come around much! You need a hungry market, the hungrier the better.
STEP 2:
Have a Product for your "Hungry" Market
Second, you need a product to sell that's wanted. That could be your own product, or it could be somebody else's product which you promote for a commission (called an affiliate product). This is what will put money in your pocket.
Creating your own product can take months of research, work and effort, but as an affiliate you can get your online business started in under an hour!
There is therefore no need to create your own products in order to start selling online. That's right, you don't even need to create your own products! So starting your own online business as an affiliate couldn't be easier.
Another option to consider is linking up with a partner, either to sell their product, or for them to sell your product. This is known as joint-venturing.
A further option is to to acquire products carrying resale rights - Many ebooks and pieces of software, especially in the field of online or internet marketing, are sold with resell rights included.
Resale rights products are widespread on the internet and often come at either minimal cost or free as part of a newer package. The secret is identifying which are worth acquiring and marketing.

The more products you sell the better. Your aim should be to develop "multiple streams of income". The most successful marketers could be promoting upwards of 30 different products at any one time, all from different websites.
STEP 3:
Purchase a Domain Name
This is remarkably inexpensive. I recommend 123-reg.co.uk. They regularly have excellent offers. In June .eu domain names were available for just 99p each! This month .info domain names are available at 99p each. Most other names will cost no more than £8.99 per annum. Just click the link below to get started with a Domain Name of your choice. (Beware: If you order your domain names from another source check whether it commits you to hosting your site with them for a minimum period such as 60 days - 123-reg has no such stipulation. You can either use them as your web host, or you can shop around.)
It may be stating the obvious, but when choosing a domain name choose one relevant to the product, topic or service you intend to promote. For instance, if you want to promote vintage cars, it would be a good idea to use vintage cars as part or all of the domain name title. Better still, if its a particular make then use that if you can because it all adds to the relevancy of the site. If you choose an unrelated name then you may well face a hard slog building up brand awareness that could easily have been avoided.
STEP 4:
Open accounts with eBay, Clickbank and other Affiliate Programmes
a) eBay
Anyone who's serious about establishing an online business should join eBay's Partner Network.
Although eBay is primarily known as the place to buy and sell products online, it is also a potential launchpad for building your own list of regular customers.

Building your own "List" of customers to promote and sell your products and services is the lifeblood of any online business. You should want to build a broad portfolio of affiliate marketing options. PayDotCom, the online marketplace for legendary internet marketer Mike Filsaime, is a good place to try next. PayDotCom is free to join and carries a lot of guidance.

STEP 5:
Do some research.
95% of Internet Marketing is won and lost in Market Research - The biggest mistake you can make at this stage is to concentrate on developing a product before finding out if there is a market for it. To avoid wasting time and money, check if a market exists for your product first! It's not the process that matters - it's the markets you choose and the approach you take. Copy the proven winners who've already achieved success and work backwards. There are some really useful resources available. I recommend Wordpot & Wordtracker Both are easy to use and are currently FREE!
You then can evaluate a niche by seeing exactly how many people are already looking for a given product and move into that market. It takes out the guesswork and will need hardly any "trial & error". If a product has zero or few searches then you know to steer clear of it. If it has scores of searches then you can tell that this is a sought after market with realistic opportunities.

Further sites to get acquainted with include:
MediaUK - a free resource listing almost all the UK's media, including their websites, contact info etc;
ABC Data - this is a subscription site but allows free access to some key sections, especially newspaper and magazine circulation figures;
Cision - another subscription site with some useful free sections.
These sites are well worth studying for details such as circulation figures, the types of advertisers who use certain publications and how to project yourself online. This will pay off in the long run, instead of charging in like a headless chicken and potentially inflicting permanent damage to your online business and/or wasting money which could have been easily avoided.
STEP 6:
If you wish, you are now in a position to start an online business without even having to start a website.
For demonstration purposes, if you opt to promote this site's next page "The Domain Profit Guide" (having researched first that there is a market for the product), you click the affiliate option at the foot of the page and follow the instructions to get the relevant code to paste.
If you've purchased your domain name through 123-reg, you can enter your control panel, scroll to & click the Manage Domain option and choose framed webforwarding. Then click the box for selecting the URL to forward your website to and paste in the code obtained when you clicked the affiliate option from the "Domain Profit Guide". Then click the "Update Web Forwarding" option at the foot of the page and within seconds your site should be appearing on screen before you.
You are now free to promote your site in any way you wish, either on or off-line or both. Naturally, there is much more to it than that in terms of successfully promoting the page than that but it is now up and running. Promotion options will be covered later in this page.
Some affiliates make big money this way without ever setting up a website. The problem when you choose this route though is that you restrict yourself in your marketing efforts and miss out on further opportunities - but you will have made a start at virtually no cost.
STEP 7:
Find the Webhost Offering The Most Resources
If you are really serious about making money online you must aim to produce multiple streams of income. This means setting up multiple websites, one for each product or service category. It just makes things so much easier if you have a site that you control and can change however you want. Try to look upon each site as being equivalent to a shop window. It's your presence for that good or service. It's no use piling everything into one website or it will come to resemble a flea market. This is proven not to work.
You therefore will need a webhost who will allow you either multiple, or better still, unlimited webhosting. Take a look at Nick-James.com. This basically involves sending Press Release e-mails to appropriate targeted publications covering a newsworthy item and a suitably relevant product you are marketing, complete with a web address. Readers of any subsequent Press Release article published by any of these journals (which would have been printed for free) would then simply visit the website and order online if they want the product.
A Press Release article is really just a way of advertising your product through the back door but with the much greater credibility that derives from the article being read as a news feature rather than as an advert. In effect, though, it is free advertising.
To be accepted there are various rules to follow. One of the first is to not directly contact a Publisher with your article. You must go through the right channels for it to have a chance of acceptance. After that, it can be surprisingly easy.
ii) Blogging:

iii) Social Marketing:
Clicking on one of the icons will take you to a social bookmarking site - you can use it to register with popular blogging sites and accelerate the profile of your blog(s) around the internet.
These sites allow you to store, organize, share and search bookmarks of web pages. You can save links to web pages that you want to remember or share with friends or people holding similar interests. Your chosen links can also be accessed from any computer.
Using the links
If you read an article that you find interesting or have a site or product you want to promote, you can save it for future reference or share it with other people. Simply click on one of the links to add the article to your list of "favourites".
I'd strongly recommend you join as many of the main social bookmarking sites as you can. As well as free publicity, there are also paid advertising options and opportunities to link to your sites from the Social Bookmarking sites that could catapult the ranking on the search engines which your sites can achieve.

iv)Submit Articles To High Ranking Internet Article Directory Sites:
You should know that search engines will push your website up the search engine listings if you have lots of quality backlinks. But what makes a backlink and "quality" backlinks? There are mainly two factors. One is the importance and pagerank of the site giving the link. The second is the degree to which that site is relevant to your website. So if you have a website on credit cards, a link from another credit card site will be more valuable in SEO terms that a link from a sporting goods site. So it is a great idea to get as many relevant links as possible.
The best and quickest way to get tons of good, relevant back-links to your site and improve your SEO is to write a quality article of around 300 - 500 words (putting your web link in the signature file) and then post it to leading article directory sites. If your article is successfully accepted it will give you the platform to establish backlinks from these highly rated sites and hence boost dramatically your search engine rankings. All tools should be considered for driving people online to your websites. Leaflets, newspapers, magazines, radio, plus lots of other ways to boost your profits need considering. vi)Free Online advertising:
This involves building a free listing on the various internet search engines. You will need to research effective relevant keywords and keyword phrases. Free listings generally carry more credibility than paid ones, but visitors who click those links are more likely to be browsers rather than buyers. Visitors who click the paid "sponsored" listings are more likely to be buyers.

viii)Linking To Other Websites:
As with other forms of marketing don't restrict yourself to one option. It will be far quicker to make progress with your online business by joining or partnering with other websites. Firstly, the more links you have to other websites the more the Search Engines like your site and hence the higher the listing you can achieve with them. Additionally, you can take advantage of the knowledge and guidance to be found on these sites. Here are but two examples:

ix)Paid Online advertising:
This is termed pay per click advertising and the leading outlets are Google Adwords, Yahoo and MSN. These sources can be productive but must be used with caution or you will be throwing money away. Both WordpotandWordtracker (refer back to Step 3) can give a lot of pointers regarding which search terms are in demand. The drawback is some terms are very competitive and will cost a lot per click. Its best to work up on less well searched terms to begin with and keep bids low. You can start at 1 Pence or Cent per click but the more the term is used, the higher it is to bid. It's usually better to drop any search term when it goes above 10 pence per click unless it is yielding you productive results. Always make sure you set an affordable budget ceiling or you will risk owing a lot of money.
If going ahead with Pay Per Click you'll need to sign up for an account with Google Adwords account, Yahoo & MSN. Just follow their prompts.
Google will ask you to "Target customers by location". You can either select "All countries and territories," or limit yourself to particular countries relevant to your market, eg there's no point marketing a ferry service between Melbourne and Tasmania to customers in Norway.
Now, you'll be prompted to create your first Google advertisement. This is easy.
Next, Google will ask you to enter some keywords. Think of what search terms people will enter to arrive at a page where your ad might appear. Wordpot & Wordtracker (see Step 3) are invaluable tools in this process.
Enter a number of words that best represent the product or service you've decided to put in your prototype. The more keywords you choose, the more Google can show your ad. But they must be "quality" keywords to help you control the cost per click and maximize your profits.
You can also enter as many keyword phrases as you want to.
When you're asked to choose a currency, you should, of course, choose the one with which you wish to pay Google for your advertising. Just select the currency that you use most often.
When asked "What is the maximum you would like to spend, on average, per day?" simply enter £1.00 or the equivalent in your chosen currency.
When Google asks "What is the maximum you are willing to pay each time someone clicks on your ad," enter 1 Pence or Cent or the minimum bid that Google lets you enter (be very careful about anything over 10 pence/cents to begin with).
Once you create your ad, Google will ask if you want to review it. You'll also be asked whether you want to receive information from Google and to indicate where you heard about Google Adwords. Now, click "continue."
Next, choose a login. If you already have an account with Google, you can use it to start your Adwords account. If you don't, sign up for one by choosing "Create a new Google Account."
Enter your email address and password. Then click "continue." Now, you'll be directed to a page where you'll confirm your email and address. You'll also find the information you need to sign into your account.
Google Adwords, Yahoo and MSN carry plenty of useful information themselves if you want to use this method to generate business.
The issue of whether to use Google Adwords is the subject of much heated debate amongst internet marketeers. One side argues it to be unnecessary whilst the other side state that if used properly it will get results quicker and more effectively than other methods. Before going any further I'd recommend you read from one of the leading authorities on the subject - New York Times bestselling author and Google-Certified AdWords Professional, Frank Rumbauskas. You have the option of short circuiting all the above methods by hiring a relevant mailing list to send your offers to, either on or offline, or both. The widely acknowledged leader in this field is Hilite Direct Marketing. They may not be the cheapest option but like anything else "you get what you pay for". Their lists are relevant, targeted and up-to-date and most leading internet marketers swear by them. It may cost less to get lists elsewhere, but if that list was out of date or unreliable it will be worthless.
Hilite can provide lists for both online and offline campaigns. As a rule, offline marketing still yields a much greater response rate than online marketing. 99.9% of letters get opened, email opening rates are substantially lower.
TESTING AND TRACKING
For all the above methods the key is to TEST, TEST, TEST otherwise you will go BROKE, BROKE, BROKE.
That's the difference between making and losing money online. Do it right from the start, and you know exactly where you are making money (where you can boost your investments to make even more), and where you're not (and need to change or drop something, so you don't waste any money on them). Get it WRONG and you're dead in the water.
STEP 9:
Build Your List.
Running a long-term successful online business hinges on one key strategy: building opt-in lists.
I am assuming you've read this far because you want to learn how to use the Internet to create income or potentially, wealth. Building a big business involves building a LARGE list or DATABASE of potential customers for whatever you want to sell. This is how business works both online and offline. It's called marketing. Some would lead you to believe that the ONLY way to building a "LIST" is to hit up your friends and family. This is NOT true and is very unlikely to get you more than minimal returns for your efforts.
The hardest part is getting a customer to buy their first product or service from you. Afterwards though, you should be seeking to sell them a second, third, fourth etc. The more you gain their trust, the easier it gets - but if you don't keep a list of customers to market to, you won't even be able to start the process.
All the super-affiliates earning thousands of dollars a month have busy websites and large opt-in lists! That's how they promote their best programmes and earn big money.
Statistically, selling to a new customer costs 7 times more than selling to an existing one!
If you contact any client directly when they opt-in or buy, your sales conversion figure will typically rise from 1.5% to 20%, so always look after your customers properly.
Right now you may not KNOW what you want to sell, but you are intrigued with the POSSIBILITY of creating SOME kind of income from the Internet. If you ALREADY have a product to sell by way of an AFFILIATE programme, you are a step ahead and good for you! If you do not, do NOT worry or even focus on that right now - you will easily start to find products or services from the links on this page.
Remember at all times: "The Money Is In The List." When asked, successful internet marketeers will say that time and time again. And do you know what? The Statement is 100% Correct.
List Building is the key ingredient, provided you then keep those lists converting. In other words, developing creative strategies for monetizing opt-in lists to keep raking in bags and bags of money.
STEP 10:
Affiliate Programmes.
Join affiliate programmes. This is usually free and will give you immediate access to a host of businesses allowing you to promote their products online. Resources to promote the products will be readily available and free to use. You can be started in minutes and will receive commission payments when your sales reach a minimum threshold.
AffiliateFuture, AffiliateWindow, Tradedoubler and Webgains are four of the leading, but not the only UK affiliate operators. If you join, you will have instant access to over a thousand different businesses from whom you can choose which businesses and/or products you wish to apply to promote. You could have your own online travel agency, car sales business or any other kind of business you've wanted to have. Clicking the above banners will give full details of their programmes and the range of marketing tools and support which will be available to you.
Apart from AffiliateWindow (who require a £5 joining fee which is refunded when you reach the minimum commission threshold of £20), these companies are free to join and offer an easy way to get an online business started. You'd have nothing to lose by joining all them and will get access to a vast range of marketing tools, guidance and exclusive online promotions to retail.
STEP 11:
Dropshipping.
Drop shipping, the shipping of merchandise from your supplier's inventory directly to your customer, is one of the fastest growing ways for entrepreneurs to enter the world of ecommerce quickly, without a lot of upfront investment. Drop shipping itself is not a new concept; it is a well-tested approach that mail order companies have used for years to streamline order filling. And, it's perfectly designed to work in the ecommerce environment.
In the drop ship model, you arrange to sell products offered by selected manufacturers, wholesalers and/or distributors.
You do not purchase inventory. Instead, you promote the products through photos and information provided by the supplier and/or by showing sample products.
When the customer orders the product, you collect payment then transfer the order and payment to the supplier who then packages and ships the product directly to the customer, often with your shipping label or other branding.
Example (£20 product):
* You transfer shipping costs to the customer. (You will save 50p/unit; your customer will pay more for single order shipping.)
* You may be able to reduce your £5.00 overhead costs because you don't need to purchase in bulk, store and handle the merchandise. Say that saves you £1.00/unit.
Now you have two choices. You can either:
1. Sell the product for £20.00/unit and increase your profit to £3.90/unit (£2.40 profit + £1.00 saved on overhead + 50p saved on shipping) or
2. Pass on some of the savings to your customers in order to be more competitive and sell a greater volume of products.
Sounds perfect, doesn't it? Well, you're absolutely right; drop shipping can be a wonderful way to build or expand a business for many reasons. Of course, there are some drawbacks as well. If you allow me your name and e-mail address I can explain further.
One big tip for dropshipping: When contacting suppliers, always ask for the regular or standard method of delivery. That way, when the product is delivered to the customer it will be labeled with the manufacturer's contact details, not yours. If any problem then arises the customer can deal direct with the supplier without you needing to be involved.

STEP 12
Have A PayPal Account
If you want to break away from selling other people's products to sell your own you will need a mechanism for accepting payments. Although you can find alternatives, Paypal is probably best to begin with as it is free to join.
Once this has been done, you can now accept credit card payments from your online customers without any direct involvement on your part.
87% of internet customers pay by credit card. Accepting credit cards online has been proven to boost a business's sales by 400 per cent.
Customers will trust you more because you will look like a real business. You just need to follow these simple steps:
a) If you don't have an account sign up for one;
b) Log in to your account;
c) Click on the "Merchant Services" Tab at the top of the screen;
d) Click on the "Buy now buttons" option under "KEY FEATURES";
e) Fill in the pricing and other details about the product you are selling;
f) Toward the bottom of the screen is an "add more options" button - click it and then follow through to get the HTML you need to copy and paste into your webpage. Its that easy!
You won't even need to know your customers' credit card numbers, PayPal handles the whole transaction. The customer pays and is then sent where you want to send them. This could be a download page for an "ebook" or a "thank you" message for what they've ordered.
It could all happen at 4AM when you are sound asleep or whilst you are enjoying your day, maybe sailing, playing golf or having a day at the races!
STEP 13:
Acquire More Resources
If you want your online business to grow you must re-invest in it just like any other business for long term success.
Adwords Digger is a brilliant tool, currently FREE. Most free software is PURE JUNK. However, this is a great tool that's definitely an exception. It is a MUST-USE tool for anyone wanting "targeted traffic".
Adwords Digger will find high-traffic, highly targeted sites that will get you a lot of traffic for a lot less than normal Pay Per Click rates. It is also very easy to use, with well explained directions.
CJB.NET is an alternative option to TinyURL and is also a largely free to use service which allows you to convert an affiliate link URL to a more professional looking URL (also enabling you to cloak affiliate URLs) and a range of other services to enhance your internet business.
Corbis is another great site which you can use to find and order graphics and photographs to use to make your sites more interesting and appealing.
Download.com gives access to the leading free software tools currently available. They undertake to test all software on Download to ensure all tools are 100% free of spyware, viruses, and other malware.
STEP 14:
Look To Outsource Work
As you become more established, the more work you can outsource the more time you have for yourself and the more commitments you will be able to meet. In a nutshell, if you can contract 10 people who can each do 70 per cent of the work you can do, then the sum total (10 x 70%) will increase your potential business capacity by 700 per cent. Additionally, some of them may even be better at the aspect of your work that you are outsourcing than you are!
Although it might be necessary in the early stages to keep costs down, internet marketing is not about sitting at a computer terminal hour after hour laboriously building your own websites. To be successful most of your time should be geared towards marketing.
